Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup red and green M&Ms for holiday color

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to lift the bars out after baking.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing well until fully incorporated.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and M&Ms, reserving a handful for topping.
  4. Spread the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle the reserved M&Ms and chocolate chips on top for a festive look. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  5. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the bars out of the pan. Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a chewier texture, slightly underbake the bars
• Avoid overmixing the dough to keep the bars tender
• Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat
Food Safety:
• Ensure the egg is fresh and stored properly before use
• Store bars in an airtight container to prevent spoilage
