Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water 110°F
  • 2 tbsp olive oil plus extra for greasing

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Pizza stone (optional)
  • Pizza peel or baking sheet
  • Rolling pin

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast. Pour the warm water into the well and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
  2. Add the olive oil to the yeast mixture. Using a wooden spoon, gradually mix the flour into the liquid until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a pizza stone inside, if using. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2-4 portions, depending on desired pizza size. Roll out each portion on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
  5. Transfer the dough to a pizza peel or baking sheet dusted with cornmeal. Add your favorite toppings and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Slice and serve hot.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a crispier crust, pre-bake the dough for 5 minutes before adding toppings
• Avoid overworking the dough to prevent it from becoming tough
• Serve with a side salad for a complete meal
Food Safety:
• Ensure the dough reaches an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C) when cooked
• Store leftover pizza in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking
